New Mommy InsightsI am a Mother! What do I do now? There is no role more important than that of being a Mother. And until I had babies of my own, I didn’t realize how all-encompassing being a Mommy would be. So, here are my insights into being a new Mommy:
1. Becoming a Mother is a life altering experience! It means letting go of a pre-mommy life of routines and order and accepting a flexible, somewhat chaotic life, controlled by a tiny baby. It means letting go of morning showers, food at meal times, sleep, clean clothes, and adult conversation. But it also means embracing tiny fingers, tickly toes, fluffy hair, a cuddly little body, and that newborn baby smell…not to mention the constant breast feeding, spit up, dirty diapers and tears (both the newborn baby’s and yours).
2. Motherhood takes time…and plenty of practice! Motherhood is a learning process. There is no right way to be a Mother. We learn through trial and error, from our family and friends, and from parenting books and workshops. As Mothers, we are continually growing into Motherhood. We are constantly figuring out what works best for our families…and just when we think we’ve gotten the hang of being a Mommy our babies grow and develop into a new stage that requires us to learn once again.
3. Love your tiny little miracle! Put your whole heart into getting to know your newborn baby. Use these first few months to build the foundation of your lifelong relationship. Spend lots of time enjoying your little miracle: hold each tiny finger, tickle each tiny toe, and kiss those chubby cheeks.
4. Mommies need naps too! Don’t forget to take care of yourself. I know this is much easier said than done, but it’s important to find some time for yourself . . . even if it’s a 10-minute shower at 10pm.
When all is said and done, being a Mother has been the best experience of my life. Sure there’s lots of ups and downs, but the ups are so extraordinary that no down could touch them!
