My girlfriend and I found out yesterday that we are 5 weeks pregnant. This pregnancy was unexpected and has scared us both.

I am almost positive we both want this child in our lives, we are just freaking out because we dont have much financial security.

I am also scared because my gf has had a few drinks and even a couple cigarettes over the last 5 weeks.

She has since stopped, but I need to know if a few drinks in the first couple weeks can have severe affects on the child within.

congrats. Don't worry, a lot of women don't know they are pregnant until later on in their pregnancy. A few drinks and cigs shouldn't harm the baby. If your gf is only 5 weeks, no harm done.
Babies do require a lot of stuff... I would look for 2nd hand furniture & stroller to keep the costs down. Just get the basics... crib, change table & a comfortable chair (for feeding & rocking baby). The only thing I would buy new would be the car seat. Start saving!!!

Make sure you have someone through a baby shower!

Congrats!
Don't worry about the drink or smokes as the baby doesn't share blood with mom until after 60 days.
No one is ever finanically ready for kids unless they are millionaires!! Kijiji is an awesome website to get used stuff, some stuff is barely used!! Good luck!
