Hi
I'm 11 weeks pregnant, a first time mum and also new to Toronto.

I went to a walk-in clinic for a pregnancy blood test to confirm my pregnancy which was then followed by more blood tests and an ultra-sound scan. Went to the clinic for the results today. When I asked the physician when I get to be referred to an OB, he said much later and asked me to come back 3-4 weeks later for more test.

Is this a normal procedure in Toronto? I read from some forum that one don't get to see an OB until 28 weeks or even 32 weeks into pregnancy...

In this case, how do I secure an OB of my preference before he/she is taken up?

Thanks!!

I am in the sam situatonas you. I am new to Ontario and I am going to the walk in clinic today to confrim my pregnancy. I am from the US and had my 2 babies there and the prenatal care proceedure is so differant! Just the thought that I may not see an OB until later in my pregnancy scares me!!!!! When I heard that I couldn`t even believe it! In the US if you were to go to a walk in Clinic to confirm a pregnancy they would laugh at you and tell you to go to the Gyno, which I saw at least 100 times from very beginning to the very end of pregnancy! I don`t even know the what they will do at the clinc? How long will it take to get the results? Is it instant? You said you had a ultra sound? Did they do it the same day you went in for bloodwork?

Thanks!!

Hi LeeAnn

The walk-in clinic that I go to doesn't do blood test or ultra-sound. They referred me to a lab to get my blood test done and another place for ultra-sound. You don't get the blood test result on the spot, the lab will mail it to the walk-in clinic after 2-3 working days. As for the ultra-sound (which was to date my pregnancy), I got to know how far I'm along from the sonographer directly. He would then mail the report to the clinic after 1 week. Hence, there were many to-and-fro trips made...I do hope the process is much easier for you.

P/s: I've finally secured an OB after a month of waiting and calling!!

Hello;

I am from Ottawa, Ontario and have lived in Toronto as well, although I now live in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Anyways, do not let the doctors tell you that you should should get an OB in a few weeks. I am 7 weeks pregnant and my family doctor is already arranging an OB for me, I am just waiting for the call now when he finds one for me.

I would go back into the clinic and ask to be offered an OB right away, since that is your right. This is my first pregnancy and i want things started now. If they wont get one for you, go online and look an OB and see if they are taking new patients. You deserve to get your pre-natal care started right away.

Congratulations and good luck!
