Craft Ideas for Your Little Valentines

Crafts are fun for kids of all ages but sometimes it can be tricky finding crafts that the littlest hands can enjoy. Here are three craft ideas that can work for your tiny artist, as well as more experienced artists in your family:

1.     Valentine’s Day Cards

Why not make your own this year? Here’s what you’ll need:
·     Scissors
·     Coloured paper
·     Finger Paints (Yes, messy. But very fun for little hands!)
·     Markers or coloured pens

First, you will need to cut out your cards. We decided to make pink heart shaped cards at our house, but you can use whatever shape, colour or size you like. Hayley, who’s four, was able to cut out her own hearts. For Carly, who’s one, I pre-cut large (1/2 letter-sized page) pink hearts for her.

The next step is to put a small amount of red finger paint on two paper plates. In our case, neither artist required assistance sticking their hand in the wonderful red paint! Once little hands are full of red paint, ‘stamp’ the hand on the centre of the heart to make your Valentine. (Little artists might need a little guidance to put their hands down flat on the paper). Each card is stamped with love from your little Valentines. Once they are dry you can write little messages on them – ready for delivery!

2.     Valentine Animal Pictures

All animals are made with love! Here’s what you’ll need:
·     Scissors
·     Glue
·     Lots of different sized and coloured hearts
·     Paper (white card stock or construction paper)
·     Markers/crayons

For this craft, I pre-cut all the hearts. I made big hearts, little hearts, medium hearts and tiny hearts in a variety of colours. I have two girls at home so I stuck with traditional Valentine’s Day colours such as red, pink, and purple but feel free to use whatever makes your little one happy.

Give each set of hands a white sheet of paper, lots of hearts and a glue stick. For Carly, I gave her some hearts that already had a tiny bit of glue on them and showed her how to stick them to the paper. A few hearts stuck to her but many more made it on the paper. I’m not quite certain what animals she made but she definitely had fun! Hayley made lots of teddy bears, some fish and some dogs.

You can have your older artists finish off their picture by using the markers or crayons to add eyes to their animals or trees in the background.

3.     Flower Pots of Love

So cute, and make great gifts for Grandma! Here’s what you’ll need:
·     Scissors
·     Glue
·     Popsicle sticks or straws
·     Tissue paper or Kleenex
·     Small flower-pot-like containers (try yogurt containers or plastic cups)
·     Crayons/markers
·     Odds and ends (googly-eyes, string, or anything you might have around the house to decorate your flowers)

For little hands, you’ll need to pre-cut some hearts (3-5 hearts for each flower pot). Once you have your hearts it’s time to decorate them! Hayley decided to make faces on hers using googly-eyes and markers. For Carly, I gave her the cut-out hearts along with some toddler crayons (Crayola Tadoodles). She scribbled all over the hearts - and her high chair - so make sure you use washable crayons!

Once the hearts are decorated, glue each heart to a straw (or Popsicle stick). Then, fill your cup with the tissue paper and stick each of the ‘flowers’ into the cup. The tissue paper will help keep your flower standing. Now they will make perfect adornments for the window sill!

Happy Valentine’s Day!
