Ringing in the New Year with your Family

With 2010 quickly approaching, parents and caregivers are busy preparing for New Year’s Eve celebrations with their children. This special evening provides a great opportunity for families to spend quality time together. We've brainstormed some ways that parents and caregivers can celebrate the New Year with their families!

  1. Serve sparkling apple juice in plastic champagne glasses: This delicious treat for the kids will allow them to be a “grown-up” and feel included in the festivities. You may even be able to sneak a couple sips!
  2. Sparklers: These hand-held “sparklers” can be used outside on New Year’s Eve; they emit coloured flames, sparks, and other effects. Only children that understand the risks associated with sparklers should be allowed to use lit sparklers and only while supervised by an adult.
  3. Have a bonfire: If you have the resources and open space, a bonfire is a great way to celebrate the New Year while also staying warm!
  4. Check with your community for local celebrations for families: Community centres and recreation halls will sometimes organize New Year’s celebrations for families. Check your local newspaper and community bulletin boards.
Prior to New Year’s festivities, take the time to reflect on 2009 and look forward to 2010. Have each member of the family share their favourite memories from the past year and describe why they were special. Then discuss what you would each like to do or try in the New Year; this can include books to read, volunteer work to do, sports to try, etc.  Make a list. You can reflect on these goals during your next New Year’s celebration!
