Hot Book: Money Smart Mom

There’s no doubt Canadian families are feeling the pinch these days, and there’s a new interest in an old-fashioned habit – pinching pennies. After all, raising children is expensive, isn’t it?

It doesn’t have to be, says Sarah Deveau, author of Money Smart Mom: Financially Fit Parenting. Her book is a guide for Canadian families in need of a little money smarts. It’s for those wondering how they'll be able to afford kids, where to find extra cash for RESPs, or how to handle the reduction in income maternity leave entails.

Deveau published her first lifestyle financial guide, Sink or Swim: Get Your Degree Without Drowning in Debt after graduating from the University of Calgary. “With Sink or Swim, I combined research with personal stories to impart the message that students could graduate without an enormous debt load. A few short years later, I was searching for books that would help me figure out how to navigate the material expenses of having children as well as the bigger financial issues, such as reduced income on maternity leave.”

Finding little, Deveau decided to write the book she wished she had been able to buy at the bookstore. “Actually, I wanted to write the book I wished I could have borrowed from the library!” says Deveau. She began researching and writing in between having three daughters in four years, and opening Cater Tot Consignment, a children's consignment boutique in Airdrie, Alberta.

With solid research from this mom of three who has been there, done that financially, plus tips from moms in a variety of different financial situations, Money Smart Mom: Financially Fit Parenting helps families get on the right track financially.  For more information or to buy your copy click here.
