Etsy BabyAh, Etsy. Where have you been all my life? In 2008, Etsy.com www.etsy.com was undisputedly my best (and most dangerous) on-line discovery. In my life it now ranks before Craigslist and e-bay, and just after my husband. For those of you who haven’t the foggiest idea what I’m talking about, Etsy is an on-line community of artisans, a virtual Grand Bazaar if you will, featuring the wares of the world’s most creative and talented people. What I love most about Etsy is that it empowers small-scale artists (many of whom are working and stay-at-home moms) by enabling them to sell and promote their handmade wares in a virtual setting. For buyers, there is also the added advantage of having that personal touch, and a direct dialogue with the very people who make these wonderful products. We can ask detailed questions about materials and methods, and have items tailored or customized to meet our specific needs.
With Etsy, anything is possible. I could post the blueprints to my dream home and some craftastic Etsy vendor would have it needle-felted for me within the week. They can do amazing things. Trust. And see for yourself. The following items are a sampling of my favourite baby and kiddy items to be had.
Little Professor Cardigan by Baby Vintage Revival
This tiny hand knitted sweater was made with love by an Etsy vendor known as LadeeBee right in my Toronto Junction neighbourhood! This sweater is so warm and cozy; it’s the sartorial equivalent to a crackling fire and a steamy cup of hot cocoa. In natural, 100% cotton with chocolate and cranberry tweed accents. And to top it off, vintage leather buttons! A made-to-order hand knitted sweater would make a perfect gift for a special new baby. Details.
Cherry Dress by Whimsy Couture
This dress is full of girlish whimsy and makes me feel envious of those parents out there with a little girl to dress up. Then again, they could probably make it in my size! Details.
Punk Rock Tutu by Lulu Bird Boutique
A tutu with a little edge! Now we’re talking. These custom tutus are a must for any punk princess in training! Details.
Mr. T Onesie by Bambina Mia
I pity the fool who doesn’t own this awesome felted Mr. T onesie. I don’t care if I’m dating myself here with my fond recollections of the A-team. It just plain rocks. Details.
Miss Madeline Peasant Dress Pattern by Little Dresses
My New Years’ Resolution is to learn to sew! I have Etsy to thank for that inspiration. Behold my first sewing project. This flowy peasant dress makes me want to run barefoot through a field of daisies. Details.
Priscilla Knit Doll and Parker Puppy by Silly Turnip
These one-of-a-kind hand sewn and embroidered creations produce oohs and aahs from kids and adults alike. They are made from vintage and recycled materials and add style and whimsy to any toy collection! Details.
Fox in the Woods Print by Paper Sparrow
Paper Sparrow features wonderfully affordable gocco prints, original art, greeting cards, and shadow boxes. These paper creations would look fantastic in a baby’s room. I’ve ordered the sly fox for my son’s room, but also fell in love with the gnome and mushroom print. Details.
